OK…fair enough: you might not give a fig that Stonehenge was (or was not) once a complete circle of stones, but for archeologists, anthropologists, historians and many who are engaged in the study of humanity, it matters. Big time. Turns out, the missing stones in the southwest quadrant of the Stonehenge circle appear to have actually once existed….what happened to the becomes the next mystery….
Why is this a big deal? Because it means the ancient Britons knew enough about the cosmos to have a “complete” view of the solar transport of the “heavenly bodies” and were able to track them through the entire year. Once again, modern technologists can be humbled by the knowledge of their forebearers.
The discovery is an amusing tale, as the scientific community has been trying for decades to determine what happened to the southwest quadrant of stones, or whether it ever existed at all, for decades. Its was a result of the fact that the current caretakers of the site were unable to get a hosepipe to reach the affected quadrant of the site to water the grass.
What I want to know is:
- Who would/could take the missing stones?
- Why?
- What did they end up doing with ’em?
