UK’s National Portrait Gallery’s “Touched Up” Elizabeth

Researchers at the United Kingdom’s National Portrait Gallery revealed ‘airbrushed’ Elizabeth I in X-ray of portrait. The original portrait shows an elderly Elizabeth in elaborate costume. This ‘warts & all’ depiction was almost completely painted over in 18th century to create the more flattering image we see today. Jump here to see the original and the touched up version, now on display at the Gallery’s special Tudors exhibit.
